5 things you need to know (ADV)

The Samsung Galaxy S21 has been announced and the new flagship will soon be in Dutch stores. At MediaMarkt you can pre-order the smartphone and in this article we discuss five things you need to know.

1. Three devices: something for everyone

As with the Samsung Galaxy S20 series, three Galaxy S21 devices will appear this time. These are the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21 + and Galaxy S21 Ultra. The S21 is the entry-level model and even slightly cheaper than the S20 last year. Do you want the same features and innovations, but with a larger screen? Then you can choose the S21 +, which has a 6.7-inch display. In comparison: the regular Samsung S21 does with 6.2 inches.

If you’re looking for the best of the best, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is for you. This device is more expensive, but has the very best specifications and is the ultimate Samsung flagship of this year. The phone also has the largest screen (6.8 inches) with the highest resolution and the very best cameras (more on that later).

2. Completely new design

With the Galaxy S21 series, Samsung also introduces a new design. The device resembles its predecessor at the front, but if you turn it around you see that it really is a new flagship. The Galaxy S21, S21 + and S21 Ultra not only come in all kinds of fresh colors, but Samsung has also changed the design considerably.

The camera island, where all lenses and sensors are incorporated, now continues from the side into the housing and is therefore more subtly concealed. This looks neat and it clearly gives the Galaxy S21 its own face. With many smartphones, the camera module sticks out of the housing, but this is not the case with the S21.

Also nice: the screen of the Samsung S21 has a high refresh rate of 120Hz. This means that the display is refreshed 120 times per second and that produces very smooth images and animations. You notice this when you read websites and scroll a lot, but also in games that support this.

With the Galaxy S21, Samsung is also taking the necessary steps in the camera area. The S21 and S21 + have three cameras on the back: a 12-megapixel primary camera, 12-megapixel wide-angle lens for extra-wide photos and a 64-megapixel telephoto lens to zoom in considerably. In addition, Samsung has improved the Space Zoom function, so that zoomed photos have more detail and less noise.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra goes a little further and even has two zoom lenses: one with 3x optical zoom and the other with a whopping 10x. The cameras work together and the S21 Ultra automatically switches cameras based on the distance to your subject. If you want to photograph something from very far away, the 10x optical zoom is used. If you stay a little closer, the camera will get to work with 3x optical zoom.

Furthermore, a lot of features have been added. Consider, for example, 8K Video Snap, a function that allows you to select 8K photos from 8K videos taken. In addition, the Single Take option has been adjusted so that you can capture even more photos and videos at the same time. Also new is Director View, with which you can turn on the cameras on the front and back at the same time.

4. Hardware, battery and 5G

The other specifications of the Samsung Galaxy S21, S21 + and S21 Ultra are of course also perfectly fine. They feature a new Exynos processor, making them even faster than last year’s S20 phones. In addition, they have a lot of memory and storage space, so that you can run any app effortlessly. If you want more storage for your photos, videos and music, you can buy a version with more space for 50 euros.

Also important is of course the battery. The Samsung smartphones have large batteries of 4000, 4800 and 5000 mAh respectively, so you can get through the day without any problems. Charging is nice and smooth thanks to the fast charging function and you can also charge wirelessly. Finally, it is possible to power other devices by placing them on the back of the Galaxy S21.

5. Free Galaxy Buds and Galaxy Smart Tag

The Samsung Galaxy S21 has a suggested retail price of 849 euros, while you go for the Galaxy S21 + 1049 euros. The S21 Ultra comes first 1249 euros over the counter. If you buy the S21 or S21 +, you get a free set of Galaxy Buds Live (wireless earbuds) and Galaxy Smart Tag (device to find your stuff. If you go for the S21 Ultra, you get the brand new Galaxy Buds Pro and Galaxy Smart Tag. Pay attention: this promotion runs until January 28, so one day before the release.
