Qualcomm fingerprint scanner 2021

The successor to the first fingerprint scanner in a screen from 2017 has now been announced. It is the second generation of the 3D Sonic Sensor and the new variant has been significantly improved on two points.

First of all, the surface of the scanner is 77 percent larger than its predecessor. The previous generation had a scanning area of 4 by 9 millimeters, which has now been increased to 8 by 8 millimeters. That means that it takes less time to put your finger in the right place, and that in turn provides more ease of use.

The second advantage also has to do with the larger sensor. This new variant can store 1.7 times more biometric data. This ensures that the scanner recognizes the finger up to 50 percent faster. According to some insiders ensures that just a light touch is enough to unlock the device.

This scanner works via ultrasonic sound waves that create a 3D image of your finger. Therefore it also works if you have a wet or greasy finger. That is different from an optical scanner, which takes a picture of your finger and is slightly less accurate and fast. You often find such a type of scanner in devices with a lower price.

Samsung Galaxy S21 devices, first with this scanner?

Qualcomm says the new fingerprint scanner will appear in smartphones at the beginning of this year. However, it seems that the upcoming Galaxy S21 devices from Samsung will already be the first. The first generation of Qualcomm’s fingerprint scanner previously appeared in the Galaxy S10 and Samsung S20, among others.

The unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S21 will take place next Thursday (January 14) and Android Planet will of course report extensively. We expect to see three devices there: the Galaxy S21, S21 Plus and S21 Ultra. The regular S21 and S21 Plus differ little in terms of hardware, but have a different screen size.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra will be the real top device with better cameras and a larger screen with a higher resolution.
