Film tips week 6 (2021): Life in a Day and Space Sweepers

1. Life in a Day 2020 (YouTube)

People from all over the world filmed their lives for a YouTube project on July 25, 2020. More than 300,000 videos were sent from 192 countries. That’s where this film comes from, directed by Kevin Macdonald and produced by Ridley Scott. The film shows all sides of life, with normal parts such as getting up, eating and exercising to love, pain and hope. And that in the middle of the corona crisis.

2. Space Sweepers (Netflix)

The science fiction film Space Sweepers is the first major film of this genre from South Korea. The movie was just going to hit theaters, but then came corona. Now you can stream Space Sweepers via Netflix. That is very rewarding, because it is a very nice ride. The film is about a group misfits that cleans up waste in space to make money. Suddenly they come across something very valuable: a bomb disguised as a child. What can they do with that again?

3. Sex Tape (Discovery Plus)

It is time for the first Discovery Plus Original from the Netherlands. The streaming service is best known for the more family-friendly and sometimes educational shows, but that’s not the case with Sex Tape. Presented by Bobbi Eden, this series features famous and unknown couples filming their sex life and then discussing it.

4. Bliss (Prime Video)

You can now watch Bliss on Prime Video. The confusing science fiction film is about a man who lives between two realities. A real nasty world and a kind of beautiful virtual reality. But then the worlds begin to merge and he has to decide where he belongs. Do you often wear VR glasses? Then you should definitely watch this one. Featuring Owen Wilson and Salma Hayek, among others.

5. Mayim Bialik’s Breakdown (podcast)

You may know Mayim Bialik as the socially awkward, but super smart Amy Farrah Fowler. What you may not know is that the actress is also a neuroscientist and knows everything about what is going on in our heads. In her new show, which you can watch on YouTube or listen to as a podcast, she talks to other nice people about mental health. This is accessible and interesting through a combination of humor and scientific insights.
