Google has rolled out Play Points, a free savings program that gives you points with every purchase. You can then exchange this for a discount on apps, movies, games and more. In this article we explain how to start saving.

Google Play Points available in the Netherlands
The savings program is rolling out in phases. This means it can take a few days to weeks before you can participate. You activate Play Points via the Play Store, Google’s app store. You can register via a computer or Android smartphone (or tablet):
- Grab your phone and open the Google Play Store app;
- Tap the settings menu at the top left of the screen, identified by the three dashes;
- Select ‘Play points’ and press ‘Join’.
Don’t have your Android device at hand at the moment? You can also register for Google Play Points via a computer:
- Go to the website of the Google Play Store and log in with your Google account if necessary;
- Click on ‘Play Points’ on the left side of the screen and select ‘Participate’.
About Google Play Points
Play Points is Google’s savings program. You get one point for every euro spent in the Google store. You can then exchange this for credit. You then use this credit to purchase apps, movies, games, books and subscriptions at a discount, or even completely free. You can also use the points for in-app purchases, for example to make the ads disappear in a free app.
You can earn extra points during special events. For example, in the first few days you get 3 points for every dollar you spend in the Google store. When you collect enough points you can progress to the levels silver, gold and platinum. With this you save more points and you can take advantage of exclusive promotions.
Play Points only works when you are signed into a Google account and you have linked a payment method to it, such as a credit card or PayPal. The savings program was previously available in other countries.
Google sees money in Play Store
Google, the owner of the Play Store, has been releasing more and more features to monetize the app store lately. At the end of 2020, the company introduced Play Pass, a subscription service for Android apps and games.
